Mr Marcel Ivanov MD, PhD, MSc, FRCS is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon whose main NHS practice is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. He is Spinal Lead at the Department of Neurosurgery and Audit Lead for Neurosciences in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. In 2017 he was elected AO SPINE UK Council Officer Neurosurgery and since 2020 he was Chairman of the AO SPINE UK and Ireland until the end of his term in 2023.

He qualified as a doctor in 1999 and as a Neurosurgeon in 2007 with his comprehensive neurosurgical training received initially in Iasi, Romania and post CCT Fellowship training in the UK.

 

He was awarded Neurosurgery International Fellowship training at the UIHC, Iowa, USA (2004), received AO SPINE-EANS Spinal Fellowship training in Leeds, UK (2008) and Neuro-Oncology Fellowship training at the Walton Centre, Liverpool, UK (2009). During his training he was privileged to visit and learn from the masters in various neurosurgical centers around the world (USA, Germany, Finland, Belgium, Japan).

He developed an interest in minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques and a special interest in the treatment of spinal cord tumors as well as image guided surgery of the spine and brain.

Mr Ivanov is passionate about teaching; he lectures, demonstrates as well as chairs numerous neurosurgical workshops nationally and internationally. He is a member of UK National Neurosurgery Selection Board and Member of International Examination Committee for EANS (Neurosurgical Examination Board). He is frequently invited to teach on various international courses, including EANS and EUROSPINE Courses.

He thinks that high quality neurosurgical education stays at the origin of professional development of each neurosurgeon. Mr Ivanov has more than 200 presentations and publications on prestigious international neurosurgical meetings, journals, books.

 

Mr Ivanov plays an active role within European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), AO SPINE and EUROSPINE. He was elected EANS IM Committee Member and is a Member of EANS Examination Committee. Between 2017-2021 he served two terms as Chair EANS International Relationships Committee and he continues to serve as member of Global and Humanitarian Neurosurgery committee. He was elected as UK Training Committee Representative at the EANS. Since 2018 he is the Board Member of the EANS Spine Section – (Liaison with Other Societies) and EANS Board Member (Historian).

 

Mr Ivanov dedicates a lot of his time to editorial work and is the Associate Editor for Journal of Spinal Studies and Surgery as well as active reviewer for a number of other journals: Spine; World Neurosurgery, Acta Neurochirurgica, British Medical Journal (BMJ); British Journal of Neurosurgery; Surgical Neurology, International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery. In 2020 he was marked as one of the top 10% reviewer for Springer.

He is Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons from England and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Sheffield University.
